CDL Training at Jones Brothers Trucking

Starting a career in trucking takes more than passing a test. It takes hands-on training, repetition, coaching, and learning how to safely handle real-world situations.

At Jones Brothers Trucking, our CDL training program is designed to help new drivers build the skills, confidence, and professional habits needed for a successful career in the trucking industry.

Requirements Before Your Class Start Date

Before beginning the program, students must:

  1. Obtain a current DOT physical and Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
  2. Obtain a Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP).

FMCSA Training Provider

Jones Brothers Trucking is an FMCSA-recognized training provider, allowing us to provide CDL training to individuals entering the trucking industry.

Our goal is not simply to meet minimum requirements. We work to develop professional drivers who understand how to operate safely, make good decisions, and properly perform the responsibilities that come with a Class A CDL.

Training includes classroom instruction, vehicle inspections, backing, city and highway driving, close-quarters maneuvering, coupling and uncoupling, trip planning, and hands-on flatbed training.

Training to the Jones Brothers Standard

Every driver who joins Jones Brothers is evaluated and trained to our standards, regardless of previous experience.

For new CDL students, that means building a strong foundation from the beginning. For experienced drivers, it means making sure their skills, safety practices, and flatbed knowledge meet the expectations we place on every professional driver representing Jones Brothers Trucking.

Our focus is simple:

Train it correctly. Practice it repeatedly. Perform it safely.

  • CDL TRAINING

Our Class A CDL training program focuses on the skills new drivers need to safely operate a tractor-trailer in real-world conditions.

    Students receive hands-on instruction in:

    • Vehicle inspections and pre-trip procedures
    • Coupling and uncoupling
    • Straight-line, offset, and advanced backing
    • Close-quarters maneuvering
    • City and highway driving
    • Mountain driving
    • Trip planning
    • Safe decision-making and professional driving habits

We don’t train students simply to pass a CDL test. The goal is to develop drivers who are prepared to safely perform the job after the test is over.

    FLATBED TRAINING

Driving the truck is only part of being a professional flatbed driver.

Our flatbed training focuses heavily on cargo securement, load placement, load protection, and safe work practices.

    Students receive hands-on experience with:

    • Straps, chains, binders, and winches
    • Proper load placement
    • Cargo securement
    • Edge protection and V-boards
    • Tarping and weather protection
    • Lumber, steel, machinery, and other open-deck freight
    • Safe loading and unloading procedures
    • Federal cargo-securement requirements under 49 CFR Part 393

For experienced drivers who are new to flatbed, this portion of the program provides the foundation needed to safely transition into open-deck freight.

Drivers with previous flatbed experience are also evaluated and trained on Jones Brothers procedures and expectations.

Our goal is simple: secure it correctly, protect it properly, and deliver it safely.

    WINTER DRIVING

Winter driving is part of trucking, especially in the Northwest and Mountain West.

Our training focuses on recognizing changing conditions before they become a problem and helping drivers make sound decisions when operating a commercial motor vehicle in winter weather.

    Topics include:

    • When tire chains are required
    • Proper chain installation
    • Chain placement
    • Snow and ice conditions
    • Mountain passes
    • Reduced traction and stopping distance
    • Speed selection
    • When conditions warrant parking the truck

We also review real-world incidents and discuss what could have been done differently to prevent them.

Sometimes the safest decision a professional driver can make is knowing when not to keep going.

    REFRESHER & EXPERIENCED-DRIVER TRAINING

Already have a Class A CDL but haven’t driven for a while?

We can help you get back behind the wheel.

Our refresher program is customized around the individual driver’s experience and current skill level. Drivers are evaluated in areas such as:

    • Pre-trip inspection
    • Backing
    • Tractor-trailer operation
    • Close-quarters maneuvering
    • City and highway driving
    • Safety procedures
    • Flatbed securement and tarping

Experienced drivers transitioning from van, refrigerated, or other freight types can also receive focused flatbed training before being released to operate independently.

The amount of training required is based on the driver’s evaluation and demonstrated ability, not simply the number of years listed on an application.
